Duty and Responsibility: The Strength to Do What's Right
Let me be honest with you. I remember the day I hit rock bottom, from playing in the NFL… to building an eight-figure business… to broke, working the graveyard shift, and taking out trash for $8.25 an hour.
Man, I could've made excuses. I could've blamed the economy. I could've blamed my business partners. I could've played the victim. But deep down, I knew the truth: I had to take responsibility for my life. Nobody was coming to save me.
That's what duty is about—doing what's right, even when it's hard or unfair, even when you don't feel like it.
As a leader, responsibility isn't something you get to choose when it's convenient. It's on you. Every decision you make, promise you keep (or break), and action you take matters. People are watching—your employees, clients, and family. They're looking to see if you'll show up when it counts.
I get it. The weight of responsibility can be heavy and too complicated. Sometimes, you feel overwhelmed, like you're carrying the world on your shoulders. But the worst thing you can do? Is nothing. Procrastination kills progress. Fear of failure keeps you stuck. And waiting for the perfect moment? That's just another excuse. There is no ideal time, but NOW.
If you want to lead with integrity, start here:
Prioritize what matters. Everything can't be urgent. Focus on what moves the needle.
Keep your commitments. Your reputation isn't built on words; it's built on actions.
Ask for help when you need it. Strong leaders don't have all the answers—they have the right people around them.
Duty isn't a burden—it's an opportunity. Every challenge you face is a chance to prove you're built for this to yourself and everyone around you.
Your challenge: Identify one responsibility you've been avoiding. Step up. Handle it—no more excuses. The sooner you take action, the stronger you become.
